Spot me if you can

October 18, 2006 by shankari

On our last trip to India when Shankari was in Salem, while I was in Chennai with Mom & Dad and I had gotten into this habit of eating fresh neem leaves. I almost jumped when this leaf started moving. I went down to the house and came back with my camera praying this magnificient specimen would still be there, and most importantly that I would be able to spot it.

Some one told me eating neem leaves would clean and clear my system T so, I religiously consumed about 10 leaves every morning for about 4 or 5 days….Glad this grasshopper did not end up like a “Fear Factor meal”

    Shankari:

I remember eating those leaves everyday right from childhood. As kid we have worms and eating this kills it.

It is really healthy eating it.

    Shankari-

Neem leaves-a, yes, it has a lot of cooling and cleansing effect. Not only for the stomach, but a few neem leaves put in water and used for a bath brings cooling effect.

You guys REALLY need to do a photo book of bugs. In fact, I would love to buy the first copy.

Do you think you could put something together? It would make the perfect Christmas present for one of my neices. Doesn’t have to be fancy, just the pic and the name and maybe where she could get more info on them.

    Let me know.

  4. Syam says:

u r rite…since we don’t have the luxury of having neem leaves here am using rum to kill the worms every weekend :-)

  5. Hema says:

Nature is amazing. It has created this creature and colored it aptly to camouflage it from its predators. And this guy! he knows where exactly to sit. Lovely picture.

    Hi,
Tender Neem leaves(small reddish ones) are used in some dishes in Bengal and though I hated them in my childhood we were forced to eat them, specially during Spring.
But as someone said even put in bath water it is good, I do that for my daughter when we go to India.
    Happy Diwali :)

  18. chitra says:

A very Happy Deepawali greetings to you both.

  19. Rajesh says:

Happy Diwali to all .. S beat me to it for responding to the comments.

Priya, as a kid growing up in Karnataka, I had to eat “bevu bella” (neem+jaggery) every Ugadhi at friends and neighbours homes and used to hate it. Neem does leave a bitter taste which seems to last.

Mitr :) next time in India, if I remember I probably will use in bath water. I didnt know this, have used eukalyptus leaves in bath water in the past but not these.

Patty, once I have enough pics I will consider doing a book. The 3 bugs I have posted contitute of 100% of my bug models so far. I have a few pics of snakes, but these are the best of my bugs pics.

    Syam,

That will only give the worms a good time, it wont kill them :) And they might start inving friends and family for the free weekend booze :)

    Hema,

Yes, truly amazing. Especially the details of the neem leaves are mimiced right up to the veins on this grasshopper.

    Maddy,
    Thanks.

tender neem leaves arent that bad, aged leaves are horrible. The after taste sticks around for quite a while, so this is a good way to cut down food as mouth stays bitter for quite a while and you dont feel like eating.

I got used to it after the second day.

    Keshi,

Yea. The second pic was kinda staged. I broke off a small branch with the neem flowers and the grass hopper still on the branch, and I was able to rotate the grass hopper with one hand and take the pic with the other. But it was worth the trouble.

    Jinguchaka,

    Thanks,

    Ponnarasi :)

    Krithika Thanks.

    Channdrika thanks.

    Foodie :)

KK :) no thanks. This grass hopper pooped right after I took the pic and that would have been quite disgusting LOL (I have a pic of that 2)

    Sandeepa thanks

Lera , definetly medicinal, I dont know about the refreshing part, but it certainly has the ability to totally waken you up.

    Karthik,

Yes I did take the pic all by myself with my 4MP pentax Optio.
    http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-450-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B00008MNCI

My mom watched me for a few minutes and went back to her drying the clothes. When it looked like the grasshopper was moving out of range, I did break off a small branch with flowers and take a few more pics from different angles moving the branch around. The second pic where it is staring was taken this way.

    Chitra thanks

  20. Patty says:

Let us see the snake pictures, please!

  21. visithra says:
